Fun and Crazy Words

After writing My Favorite Words, I found myself compelled to look for more. I  only knew  three of the words previously; the rest are new and silly sounding words, some roll off the tongue, and others, when said out loud, completely make sense!  You can find more info at Dictionary-Reference although I have included the short definition, plus my personal comment about what the word says to me.

In no particular order…

  1. doohickey: a gadget; dingus; thingumbob.
Maybe you have also never heard of a thingumbob..sometimes called a thingymabob, or a thingy..or a doowhatsit
  2. hullabaloo: a confused noise; uproar.
Tiggers are wonderful things, ha ha!
  3. hobbledehoy: an awkward, gawky young fellow.
Who hobbles on de hoy anyway.
  4. gewgaw: a trinket; a bauble.
Sheldon from Big Bang, he might use this word.
  5. brobdingnagian: gigantic; enormous.
Self explanatory. Too big to handle.
  6. susurrus: a whispering or rustling sound.
When you say this one out loud, it reminds me of Harry Potter and the snake…sssss, rustle, rustle..
  7. pusillanimous: cowardly.
He is a pussy pill and a..mouse
  8. flummery: mumbo jumbo; nonsense.
    Flim flam!
  9. flibbertigibbet: a silly, flighty, or excessively talkative person.
Who should be stuffed and cooked at Christmas.
  10. grok: to understand.
I grok, do you grok? We all grok together.

  1. And here comes some Swedish ones:
    1. Mumsfilibabba: When you really like the food. Mums is a correct word but “filbabba”??? Ask any Swede about that and the have no clue
2.Sassa brassa mandelmassa: A football”song”. Sassa has no meaning, Brassa has something to do with sailing and Mandelmassa is almond. Where is the football??
    3. Jätteliten: Giant small??? Maybe you have the same in English but we often put Jätte before a lot of words and it really shouldn’t be there.
    4. Skithungrig. Skit is shit and hungrig is hungry. “Ooooo that looks lovely I am shit hyngry…”
    So far from C

  2. this may be a bit late – but i have a family word that i use and it is the perfect word for the item – the word is toodle-oo (last syllable pronounced ew) it is the cardboard roll inside a toilet paper roll.

  3. Gooferstooferyou — A stew that is good for you…

Floccinaucinnihilipilification – this is a word made up of all the words in Latin meaning “of little value” i.e. flocci, nauci, nihili, pili so the word made from these four words means the habit of estimating things as being of little value. “The estate sale was managed by a scrofulous fellow given to floccinaucinihilipilification, so even Mama’s heirlooms were sold at low prices.” Aha! That there is the first time I have ever used, or even seen the word used in a sentence. Hope it helps.

    • Thanks Pamela! I love all the words you contributed, including your own 🙂 If I could come back for another life, I would want to be a linguist, or someone who speaks many languages. It is the key to the planet and humanity. All the best. Amanda

  4. Hi Amanda, I think I need to amend my definition of floccinaucinihilipilification to “the habit of accounting things as WORTHLESS…” since technically that is closer to the “nihili” meaning than “Of little value” but as you can see I am a leetle beet of a stickler…So in the sentence I gave for illustration, “mama’s heirlooms went for next to nothing .” Anyhow, glad you enjoyed my contributions. I have always loved words. And I am glad to find someone else who appreciates the niceties of any language. Ciao.
